An essential component of desktop sharing and help desk activities, a remote access protocol controls the connection between a remote access server and a remote computer.
There are various techniques to remotely access a client's endpoint, some of which are safer or easier to use than others like RMM tools and PSA software.
Types of remote access protocols
The main remote access protocols now in use are as follows:
Protocol for Point-to-Point Tunnelling (PPTP)
PPTP is used to create virtual connections utilizing TCP/IP and PPP so that two networks can use it as their WAN link while maintaining private network security. The purpose of PPTP is to create a secure connection between the client and the server. This type of connection, also referred to as a virtual private network (VPN), is much less expensive than a direct connection.
PPTP is frequently used to connect several LANs without incurring the expenses of leased lines. However, there are some drawbacks to this protocol:
• Not all types of servers have access to PPTP.
• PPTP is more challenging to set up than PPP.
• Throughput can be decreased via tunnelling.
• PPTP is not a completely accepted standard.
• This protocol is limited to 128-bit encryption.
• PPTP generally shouldn't be used for MSP environments for all of these reasons. Also Read: Difference Between NTFS and FAT32
