How do I choose and rent a ski jacket?

Hey, everyone! I’m planning my first trip to the Alps this year and slowly putting together my gear. However, I’ve run into a problem with my clothes, specifically my jacket. Prices are through the roof right now, so buying a new brand-name jacket is a real financial strain, and I’m not even sure if I’ll actually get to ski. For those of you who have rented jackets before, could you give me some advice on what to look for when choosing one? How do I choose the right membrane and size so that I won't be cold on the slopes?

I'm afraid they'll give me worn-out or dirty gear that a hundred other people have sweated in. Is it even possible to find decent gear at rental shops that offers good protection against wind and moisture (at least 10,000 mm), or do they usually just hand out the cheapest options?

My friend freaked me out when he told me that the rental place gave him a jacket that smelled terrible. I was already planning to bring my regular winter jacket since I don't have a special one. However, before my trip to Courchevel, I did some online research and found the website https://getski.com/ . It looked legitimate, so I figured they wouldn't partner with shops that don't wash their jackets. I rented one from them. The jacket was clean, freshly dry-cleaned, and treated with a water-repellent spray. Most importantly, check the specs to make sure the membrane is rated at 10k or higher, and that the cut won't restrict your movements when you pull up the fleece liner. Have you bought thermal underwear to wear under your jacket yet, or are you thinking of renting everything?
